𝐀𝐂𝐂𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐘𝐘𝐆𝐒

Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) es un programa académico de enriquecimiento de verano para estudiantes destacados de secundaria de todo el mundo. Cada verano, estudiantes de más de 125 países participan en una de las cinco sesiones interdisciplinarias de dos semanas en el campus histórico de Yale. Desafortunadamente, este año el programa no puede recibir estudiantes en el campus este verano, debido a la situación global, producto de la pandemia por COVID-19. Actualmente, YYGS está trabajando con estudiantes admitidos para realizar emocionantes programas virtuales durante el mes de julio.

¿Cómo se enteró del programa y qué le motivó?

Me enteré por medio de una compañera de sexto que participó en el programa y me contó sobre su experiencia. "Yale Young Global Scholars" es un programa que ofrece un aprendizaje abierto, donde es posible colaborar y conocer a miles de estudiantes alrededor del mundo. El concepto del curso, su currículo y actividades me motivaron a tener el coraje de apuntarme a esta nueva aventura.

¿Qué impacto tuvo el ser admitido al programa para su crecimiento académico y personal?

Creo que ambas fueron la razón de mi admisión dentro del programa. El tener un crecimiento académico siempre ha sido algo importante, sin embargo el crecimiento personal y otros intereses también son de gran valor dentro de tu aplicación. No solo se exige un buen nivel académico, sino un estudiante bien formado con sus propias ideas y proyectos que fomentan un cambio.

De todas los aspecto que incluía ir al programa, ¿cuál le tenía más emocionada o interesada?

El programa en toda su extensión me tiene emocionada. Yo al ser parte de la sesión de "Biological and Biomedical Sciences" estoy fascinada por las clases y seminarios que explorarán campos como la ingeniería molecular y la neurociencia. El currículo de la sesión fue lo primero que me llamó la atención, a su vez, la experiencia de conocer y compartir con estudiantes de alrededor del mundo en un programa como "Yale Young Global Scholars", es inconcebible.

How did you find out about the program and what motivated you to apply?

I learned about the program, because in May 2019, I had the amazing opportunity of going to the National Leadership Summit here in Mexico, we had a group chat on Whatsapp and a girl pointed out the existence of YYGS. I did a little bit of research and I was impressed, because it was really interesting. It was a challenge for me and I love challenges and learning new things.

I think that the best way to change my immediate reality is through knowledge, not only what I can learn here in Mexico but anywhere, so I can make the best out of everything. I wanted to apply mainly because I wanted to challenge myself. I learned about the program one week before the early action deadline and I was like “Can I do it in one week? Yes totally! I have nothing to lose”. I applied and it was good because I got admitted.

What impact did being admitted to the program have on your academic and personal growth?

Getting accepted meant a lot because I had a lot of friends who also applied and all of them were rejected or waitlisted, being offered an admission was great. I felt good enough because I felt Ivy League prepared. If I made it work in a week, what can I do with months in advance? I was supposed to go to PLE (politics, law, and economics), which I think is a really important subject in the world, especially here in Mexico as we need more legislation to protect the people that can't protect themselves. It meant mainly hope, but also that I could go under new things and that I could come back to my beautiful country and to my beautiful people to spread a little bit of that learning.

An opportunity not for curriculum growth but personal growth, because it would also come with different challenges like meeting other people with different cultures and ideas. It was a huge deal, it was a very happy moment, since it was really aligned to what I wanted to do with my life, which is give the same opportunities to everyone. I understood that in sadly, in my country, not everyone has the same opportunities.

Of all the things that included going there, which one were you most excited about or interested in?

For me going to Yale was an opportunity to see the campus and see the great architecture. But the most important thing was meeting other people, make connections and learn about their culture, even if they´re not so good, I would like to give an opinion about them. That was the most important thing to me; getting to meet faculty member, other students that were like me that wanted to make their own reality a better one. It's not happening fully, but I still feel very fortunate because at least from the group chats I got a little taste of that and I really appreciate it.

¿Cómo se enteró del programa y qué le motivó?

Me enteré de YYGS (Yale Young Global Scholars) por medio de la presentación que realizó Freda López. Un día convocaron a los presidentes y vicepresidentes de cada curso, en donde Freda expuso su experiencia en el programa que participó ese año. Los beneficios que ofrecía el programa me cautivaron, supe que era una oportunidad para superarme personal y profesionalmente.

¿Qué impacto tuvo el ser admitido al programa para su crecimiento académico y personal?

El ser admitido, académicamente, me impulsó a reforzar mi inglés y a seguir preparándome. Personalmente, ser aceptado por una universidad tan reconocida, te ofrece mucha confianza y seguridad en ti mismo.

De todas las cosas que incluía ir al programa, ¿cuál lo tenía más emocionado o más interesado?

Me emocionó el pensar en conocer a personas de tantas partes del mundo, entender sus culturas, pensamientos, ideas, entre muchísimos otros aspectos. Además, me fascinaba la idea de viajar solo a la universidad, y poder experimentar una inmersión completa de otro ambiente distinto.
